Dripping Water Certification Testing for Ingress Protection (IPX1 and IPX2)

The degree of protection that an enclosure offers against invasions is tested through ingress protection testing. The dripping water test is one such set of ingress prevention tests. The test numbers for these are IPX1 or IPX2. The first number, denoted by the letter "X," goes from 0 to 6 and indicates how well a particle is protected. Depending on the testing procedure, the second digit in the case of pouring water is either a 1 or a 2.

The two dripping water test methods that are part of IEC 60529's ingress protection testing are briefly described here.

Testing IPX1:

described as water that drips and drops vertically.

It is necessary that the dripping water have no negative impact on the equipment under test (EUT).

The test parameters include a 10-minute test period and 1 mm of rainfall per minute of water.

Testing IPX2:

described as water that drips at a slant of up to 15°.

It is necessary that when the enclosure is exposed to dripping water and tilted up to 15° from its normal position, there be no negative impacts on the EUT.
